About Us

Leeton Shire Council during 1993-97 considered proposals for the development of the eastern portion of Fivebough Swamp as a recreational lake. The Murrami, Wamoon, and Corbie Hill Landcare groups opposed the development, and were joined by the Murrumbidgee Field Naturalists in 1995 in opposing the construction of a recreational lake within Fivebough Swamp. Leeton Shire Council agreed to shelve the proposal in early 1997.

Fivebough Swamp's management for its conservation commenced on September 1, 1997. This was undertaken on advice of the NSW Department of Land and Water Conservation and NSW Department of Lands initially by a management committee of community and government agency representatives as a sub committee of the Murrumbidgee Field Naturalists, remaining in place until January 1998.

The NSW government under the direction of the NSW Department of Land and Water Conservation formally appointed a new management committee with a membership of community, industry, and government agency representatives. In 2000 following advice of NSW Department of Lands the management committee became an incorporated not-for-profit community organisation, The Fivebough and Tuckerbil Wetlands Trust.
